Car suspension – part 1

The suspension states the behavior of the car on the road, while a proper regulated system should react properly to the forces exerted on it by offering comfort and safety. More detail is needed to allow the wheels vertical movements to follow the obstacles they encounter on their way without changing the geometry.

Also it needs to ensure continuous contact of the wheels with the road, to allow steering wheels turning, restrict their movements to the longitudinal axis by passing under the acceleration forces from the torque of the driving wheels and the deceleration forces from the brakes and finally, to isolate the passenger compartment from the turbulent motion.

The operation of the suspension is determined by the geometry, i.e. the way in which the wheels tangent the road, which determines the steering response. When the wheels of the same axle are turned opposite to each other inwardly relative to the direction of movement, i.e. converge, then we talk about positive convergence. Otherwise, when they diverge, we have negative convergence, and when it is completely parallel we have no convergence.

Multi-link suspension

The multiple connections are the most advanced form of suspension used now in most modern cars. It is a complex device with a total of five or more arms, which ensures, in theory, perfect and continuous contact of the tire with the road. It is an advantage, then, is the handling and disadvantage is the increased cost of development and implementation, and the more space needed and is consumed by the passenger compartment and the luggage space.

Hydraulic suspension

Hydropneumatic suspension is free of springs and shock absorbers, but with hydrolastic metal balls, whose interior is covered by a resilient and elastic membrane. At the bottom is the oil, while up gas under pressure. A piston connected to the wheel, pushes the oil and the membrane is expanded by pressing in turn the gas in its sphere. The sphere acts as a spring and shock absorber together, since the gas once the piston is subsided, occupies its initial volume without being oscillated. It offers high levels of comfort, but it is more expensive to manufacture by a castings process.
